Q.
What do I need to access one of the CanaryNet Wireless Internet Hotspots?
A.
You'll need a Wireless Internet enabled laptop. Most recently manufactured laptops are configured for Wireless Internet and most will come equipped with a Wireless Internet card. Otherwise, you'll need to purchase a Wireless Internet adapter card (30-80€).
The minimum specifications you will need in your pc are as follows:
Pentium 3 (Pentium 4 is recommended) or equivalent 1.5Ghz
40GB Hard Drive
512 MB RAM (Memory)
Operating System: Windows XP with service Pack 2 / Windows Vista
RJ45 (Ethernet Port) Network if choosing 'hard wired' connection.
Please note!
We are internet suppliers, our installation prices do NOT include servicing or repairing faults and problems should your pc have them, therefore, an agreed charge will be made should this be neccesary to get your pc connected to the internet, this includes the fitting of network cards.
For residents of the island we also offer a 'lifetime' connection at your home or place of work. This involves us installing a small antenna and receiver plus 2 power cables in an appropriate location at your home or office, such as the roof or a wall. The installation generally takes around 2 hours to complete depending on location. The clear advantage of this system is you do not need to have a 'wireless-enabled' PC or laptop as it is linked by ethernet cable directly into your PC or workstation, (Think of it like this, its similar to getting good TV reception from an ariel fitted to your roof as opposed to a portable ariel sat on top of the TV, the one on the roof will always give a better reception). The cost is a flat one-off fee of 145€ and then your 24/7 internet connection will cost you 30€ a month. No minimum contract to tie you in knots..no hidden extras.. plus you get 'always on' broadband speed internet!

Q.
What if I need Help connecting?
A.
CanaryNet are striving to make the connection process as easy as possible. The goal is to automatically configure your laptop for connection. Some hints that should help you get connected to a CanaryNet Hotspot:
1) Be sure to set your TCP/IP properties to "Obtain an IP address automatically" (DHCP).
2) Make sure your computer is not configured to automatically use a dial-up connection.
3) If requested, choose Infrastructure mode rather than ad-hoc mode.
4) Use the SSID name (this is the 'name' that shows up when you do a search for wireless connections) provided by the location or try choosing "any". ( If you use Net Stumbler to find available networks it should tell you the SSID of the network you want to use )
5) Turn encryption (WEP) off.

Q.
What can I do at a CanaryNet Hotspot
A.
The Wi-Fi wireless broadband connection allows you to do anything you'd do from home or the office. You can surf the Web, check your e-mail, connect to your Corporate network (be sure to use a secure VPN connection), make free Voice over IP phone calls, (no more expensive calls from your mobile)!! play online games, update your blog, and IM with your friends. If you just have a modem dial-up account at home you will notice how much faster a CanaryNet Hotspot is. Top Tip: Some ISPs restrict the ability to send email when not connected to the Internet directly through them. If you are having problems with your e-mail consider using a web based e-mail account.
Q.
Is my data and e-mail secure at a CanaryNet Hotspot?
A.
CanaryNet uses a sophisticated and state of the art secure connection that is run from a high-speed server, therefore we feel our security is the best wireless security around. Despite all of this we would advise that you ensure your Anti-Virus is current and up to date along with any other normal security measures you use such as a firewall etc. From a common-sense point of view only we also advise that you keep any online banking transactions etc to a minimum, this rule should apply whether you are using a hotspot or a 'hard-wired' connection. Naturally we advise that you do not leave your pc unattended after a login nor allow anyone to use your username and password, Essentially, it is the responsibility of the user to keep their data safe and their obligation to refrain from any spamming or illegal activities.
